Australian Native Plants

Australia’s harsh climate has allowed plants to develop traits that allow them to survive in extreme conditions and has produced unique biodiversity. Consequently, native Australian plants have evolved to develop highly efficient mechanisms to create and store vital compounds to maintain their life force. For example, they have developed an efficient system to shield themselves from oxidative stress caused by free radicals induced by Australia’s harsh sunlight.

NUNKERI uses innovative technology to extract the active ingredients from Australian plants. It consists of suspending the plants in a liquid matrix that maintains the integrity of the plants' molecules and their natural synergies, just as they exist in nature. This technology creates an equilibrium between plant cells and the liquid medium that simulates the cellular environment.

The medium enters the cell walls to dissolve phytoactive compounds in it, without stressing or damaging the plants' cells. In this way, the plants' water- and fat-soluble compounds recreate the plants' unique profile. The extraction of compounds as they exist in nature allows for production of stable products that stay active for long periods of time.

Previous methods of extraction were not friendly to the plants' delicate molecular equilibrium, leaving them damaged or inactive. Hence, they require synthetic substitutions to compensate for their weaknesses and imitate natural plant profiles.

Kakadu Plum

The Kakadu Plum, also known as Gubinge, Billygoat plum, or Murunga is a tree native to Australia. This plant gained worldwide recognition when it was discovered that it is the fruit with the highest vitamin C content in the world, coming in at up to 7000 mg/ 100g dry weight. This is equivalent to 100 times the vitamin C content in oranges.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant essential to the formation of proline, an amino acid that is a fundamental building block in producing collagen. It also helps to reduce wrinkles, improve the texture of the skin, reduce the damage caused by free radicals, and protects against UV radiation.

The Kakadu Plum’s oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC-T) is 5.7 times more potent than that of the blueberry, where the absorbance is made up of 73.5% hydrophilic portion and 26.5% lipophilic portion. The lipophilic antioxidants are responsible for increasing the bioavailability of compounds in the body and help protect from oxidative stress. Due to the amount of vitamin C and lipophilic antioxidants, the Kakadu Plum offers extraordinary benefits.

Davidson Plum

For many years, this fruit has been a food source for the Australian aboriginal people. The Davidson Plum is a potent source of antioxidants that protect against free radicals, one of the main culprits in premature aging of the skin.

The Davidson Plum contains phenolic acids such as gallic acid and ellagic acid, which are natural acids that behave like alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). These natural acids act as a gentle exfoliant for the outer layers of the skin, revealing fresh, hydrated, refined, and soft skin which becomes visibly firmer over time.

Additionally, this fruit is full of other phytoactive compounds including tartaric acid, quercetin and anthocyanin (which is responsible for the fruit’s red color). Quandong

The Quandong, also known as Desert Peach, is a fruit native to Australian arid and semiarid regions. It is the fruit with the second most antioxidants, behind the Kakadu Plum.

The Quandong contains active phenolic acids which have antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and act like alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) in the skin. Phenolic acids act like a gentle exfoliant for the outer layers of the skin, revealing fresh, hydrated, refined, and soft skin which becomes visibly firmer over time.

It is rich in vitamin E, folic acid, magnesium and calcium. Vitamin E is a powerful nutrient which protects skin against free radicals, reduces inflammation and helps the skin to retain moisture.

Lemon Myrtle

The Lemon Myrtle is native to subtropical rainforests in central and southeast Queensland.

Notably, it acts as an antifungal and antimicrobial agent. Evidence shows that massaging joints with Lemon Myrtle relieves arthritis pains. It is also excellent at calming inflammatory skin lesions like psoriasis, dermatitis and acne.

Native Snowflower

The Native Snowflower, also known as Tea Tree or Narrow-leaved paperbark, is recognized for its white flowers that look like snowflakes. The flowers are native to Eastern Australia and belong to the myrtle family under the name melaleuca alternifolia.

The Snowflower contains a wide range of active phytonutrients that bring many skin benefits. They act as anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and restorative agents.

Lilly Pilly

The Lilly Pilly (Syzygium Luehmannii) is a bush native to the coastal areas of Australia which has small exotic fruits that smell similar to cloves. Its common names include riberry, small leaved Lilly Pilly, cherry satinash, cherry alder, or clove Lilly Pilly.

The Lilly Pilly is not only rich in vitamin C, but also in anthocyanins, which have the strongest anti-inflammatory properties of all tested flavonoids as well as being a powerful antioxidant. Desert Lime

The Desert Lime is originally from New South Wales, Queensland, and southern Australia and is a member of the Rutaceae family.

The Desert Lime is an important source of limocitrin and other methoxyflavone glucosides. The human body uses glucosides to cure and repair skin damage.

The Desert Lime is rich in antioxidants, which neutralize dangerous free radicals produced by our metabolism. It also contains vitamin C and folates, which smooth out irregular tones and repair skin tissue, helping in its rejuvenation. They keep skin hydrated, elastic and increase the absorption of other beneficial nutrients in the skin.

Pink Clay

Australian Pink Clay contains a unique combination of minerals, silica, magnesium, selenium and zinc. It is found in regions of Australia.

This clay is full of botanical extracts and minerals which work together to tighten pores and remove toxins and impurities in the skin. Australian Pink Clay is soft yet firm, allowing it to control oils and brighten the skin.

Pink clay is a type of clay called Kaolin. Kaolin is generally white and acquires its rosy color depending on its concentration of iron oxides. The higher the concentration of iron oxides, the darker and more absorbent the clay becomes. It comes in various tones ranging from white to red.
